5.1. West Lafayette#

There are many activities you should be doing for your own professional development as an engineering or an IBE student beyond our traditional courses. In ENGR 13300, we are including three types of experiences in the course assignments. The three types of experiences are mentioned in Table 5.1

Table 5.1 Professional Preparation Experiences#

Experiences

Description

Activities

Career Exploration

A set of seminars called Engineering Your Major (EYM) that are designed to expose you to different engineering majors and career options

\(3\)

Personal Activity

Beyond the EYM’s, each of you should be doing other activities that include attending club meetings and callouts, going to industry job fairs and going to hear speakers on campus. These can help you decide on a major and future career as well as helping you learn about opportunities for your future.

\(1\)

Cultural Experience

The Purdue community is very diverse. Experiencing that diversity will help you to grow as people and prepare yourselves to be leaders in our global economy and community.

\(1\)

For each activity, you will submit a reflection. For the EYM’s, attendance is taken, and you will need to register in advance. The Personal Activity and Cultural Activity will not have attendance recorded; you only need to write a reflection.

You have the freedom to do the activities in any order, but you must complete one by the first due date, two more by the second date, and the final two by the final due date. The due dates for these assignments can be found in the Course Schedule.

Points Distribution

Each reflection is worth \(17\) points for a total of \(85\) points. Attendance at each EYM is worth \(5\) points for a total of \(15\) points. Thus, \(85\) + \(15\) = \(100\) points. See Table 5.2 for the individual breakdown.

Reflection Rubrics

You have the freedom to do the activities (EYM’s, Personal Activity, Cultural Experience) and reflections in any order. Each activity (3 EYM’s, Personal Activity and Cultural Activity) must have a reflection in a three paragraph format as described in Table 5.4. The reflections are worth \(17\) points and are graded according to the rubric in Table 5.16.

Table 5.4 Reflection Template#

Paragraph

Description

1

Identify what type of activity this is (EYM, Personal Activity, or Cultural Activity) along with the name of the event, time, date, and location of the activity.

2

Answer the question - What did you learn from this experience that connects to your major or career interest . If the answer is not at all, please explain why and that will suffice.

3

Answer the question - How will this experience change, impact or inform you future career or personal plans or growth. If the answer is not at all, please explain why and that will suffice.
