Honors#
Students in the John Martinson Honors College may take ENGR 13300 for honors credit. The course has been set up as an H-Ready course, meaning an individual honors contract is not needed for this course.
The honors version of this course expands on standard projects, asking students to go beyond the basic learning objectives for the course. These assignments are not newly developed, stand-alone assignments; rather, they are expansions to the existing projects in this course. The expansions to the projects are as follows:
- Dream project
In addition to the dream project, students will write an addendum that focuses on speculative applications of this dream project. The addendum will focus on the following questions: How would this project affect current engineering industries and/or research? What are some unintended consequences that could arise from this project being created? This paragraph should be 5-10 sentences.
- Team project
The team project is divided into two checkpoints and a final demo. For the first two checkpoints, honors students will write an additional 5-10 sentence paragraph reflecting on how their group worked as a team for each checkpoint. Additionally, they will document the approach their team took for each checkpoint. For the final demo, honors students will work in teams to create videos that demonstrate the functionality of their team project.
- Individual project
In addition to the basic project guidelines, honors students will be tasked with adding an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) in either MATLAB or Python. This GUI will be related to the student’s individual project and must include at least 3 user-defined functions that operate in response to GUI elements, as well as 4 GUI elements/widgets that can include, but are not limited to, buttons, radio buttons, slider scales, checkboxes, and spinners. The project must also include two concepts that are new to the student (e.g., Python modules or MATLAB toolboxes). For their final report, honors students will write up how they would create a team project based on their individual project. This expanded write-up will answer questions including: What would the checkpoints and tasks be? What would the final demo be? What checks would students do along the way? What test cases would you give?
Additional Learning Objectives#
Reflect on the broader implications of engineering and computational projects and how they relate to the world around us; examine the ways projects have unintended consequences beyond their original design.
Reflect on how teamwork was used in your project and how it can be improved in the future.
Produce documentation that shows how you approached an engineering problem, creating a blueprint on how a team can effectively solve engineering-focused problems.
Communicate how an engineering solution meets the needs of the community by effectively explaining how and why it functions to a broad audience, including non-specialists.
By applying a new technique (GUI) to your project, show the ability to understand new concepts; implement them in an engineering problem; and demonstrate how to improve usability for a broader audience, giving flexibility to the end user.
Learn to scaffold a project by designing an expansion from an individual to a team project and include documentation on how a team of students could approach this type of project, including practical aspects of the project including team roles, deliverables, and checkpoints.
Scalability/Grading Assessments#
The base course for ENGR 13300 is out of a total of 1000 points. The honors version of this course adds an additional 100 points spread out across the projects in this course. Rubrics for all honors assignments will follow the same format as the other assignments. All assignments are included on the course website in the following sections. Assignments will be submitted via Gradescope.

How to Take ENGR 13300 for Honors Credit#
The first step is to speak with your advisor and let them know you want to take this course for honors credit. Your advisor will be able to help you update the grade mode for ENGR 13300 to Honors. You will request a grade mode change using the Scheduling Assistant in myPurdue. Remember to submit all H (Honors) Grade Mode requests before the deadline listed on the Office of the Registrar’s Add/Drop Calendar. To confirm your current grade mode, log into myPurdue and go to the Academic tab and Current Registration.

Once you have updated the Grade Mode for the course, take the Honors Enrollment Quiz on Brightspace. You must receive \(\qty{100}{\percent}\) on this quiz to finalize your honors enrollment in this course. Prof. Hillan will reach out around week 4 of the course to confirm your status as an Honors student for the course and give some additional information about the honors version of the course.
