Dream Project Addendum#

Instructions#

In Week 2, you were asked to imagine a Dream Project - a computer program with no limitations, based on your own creativity and vision. We are now going to revisit that idea and analyze it as an engineering project that would exist in the real world, with real-world impacts.

No engineering projects or computer programs exist in a vacuum. Everything you will create as an engineer will interact with society, the environment, and systems that are already in place. This addendum will explore the broader consequences of your Dream Project with three well-developed paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing one of the following:

  1. What would the real-world application of your Dream Project be like?

Think about how your project would function in a real-world context. Who would be using your project and what setting would they be in? Would this be for personal use, business use, government use, education use, or multi-use? How would the user interact with your program?

  2. What is the state of the current industry around your Dream Project?

Think about the existing landscape of technologies related to your dream project. Even if it is something that does not exist, it likely builds off or shares features with currently available programs. Are there start-ups or big tech companies using similar technologies? Are there any research or academic labs that are exploring similar technologies? Are you improving on a current program, or is there nothing quite like your program in the market?

  3. What are some of the unintended consequences of your Dream Project?

Whenever we create something as an engineer, we need to think of all the ways that project can be used. Is there any way someone could misuse your project, such as for surveillance, manipulation, exclusion, or harm? Could it replace existing jobs or have high environmental costs?

Each paragraph should fully answer these questions, be at least 200 words (5 to 10 sentences), and include at least one reference (three total, one per paragraph). Submit your addendum as a PDF to Gradescope with the file name dr_honors_username.pdf.
