9.3.1. Task 1#

Learning Objectives#

The goal of this task is to introduce you to large language models (LLMs), with a specific focus on ChatGPT, one of the leading LLMs in use today. AI tools are rapidly transforming the way that engineers work, solve problems, and communicate. There are many tasks which LLMs can assist engineers and engineering students, though there are limitations to this tool which should always be considered. This task will have you learn more about LLMs like ChatGPT and have you reflect on the benefits, and drawbacks, of using this technology for your academic work and future careers as engineers.

Task Instructions#

Part 1 - Investigate Large Language Models#

Read and review the following articles about Large Language Models and ChatGPT. Do some additional research on your own on LLMs to fully understand how they function, what they do well, and what they struggle with.

  1. IBM. (2023, November 2). What are large language models (LLMs)?

  2. Pazur, B. (2025, May 14). What is ChatGPT? Everything you need to know about the AI Chatbot. CNET.

  3. Wu, T. Y., He, S. Z., Liu, J. P., Sun, S. Q., Liu, K., Han, Q.-L., & Tang, Y. (2023). A brief overview of ChatGPT: The history, status quo and potential future development. IEEE/CAA J. Autom. Sinica, 10(5), 1122–1136.

Parts 2 and 3 - Artificial Intelligence Tasks#

  1. Download py3_ind_1_username.docx and follow the instructions provided in the answer sheet.

  2. Save your responses as py3_ind_1_username.pdf, and upload them to Gradescope.
